Wyoming Vs. Air Force Final Score: Cowboys Overcome Falcons, 25-17

For the first time while at the helm of the Wyoming Cowboys, head coach Dave Christensen has defeated the Air Force Falcons, 25-17. Windy conditions greatly affected this game, especially when it came to punting, but the Cowboys came up with a late touchdown to secure the victory.

Wyoming scored in the first and second quarters on a Brett Smith run and a Brett Smith pass. On the former, kicked Daniel Sullivan missed the extra point while on the latter the two-point conversion failed. Entering halftime with a 12-7 lead, the Cowboys saw that disappear after Parker Herrington kicked a 35-yard field goal and Mike DeWitt.

But it was Wyoming's game in the fourth quarter. Brett Smith rushed for his second touchdown of the game on a two-yard run. They failed on the second two-point conversion of the game. The Falcons were able to get the ball at their own 41-yard line to start a late drive, but on a Connor Dietz lateral to Brandon Hirneise, Hirneise fumbled the ball. Marqueston Huff picked the ball up and ran it in for a 48-yard score with 25 seconds left in the game.

The Falcons are now 5-5 overall and 1-4 in the Mountain West. They will need to defeat UNLV at home and Colorado State on the road to become bowl eligible (with two victories over FCS teams this season, only one counts toward eligibility).

Wyoming Vs. Air Force Score: Falcons Take 17-12 Lead Into 4th Quarter

After entering halftime with a 12-7 deficit, the Air Force Falcons turned the tables on the Wyoming Cowboys and took a 17-12 lead into the final quarter of play. Not all that surprisingly, the Falcons did not attempt a pass to get either the field goal or the touchdown.

Parker Herrington kicked a 35-yard field goal with 9:55 left in the game, the first drive of the second half. After Wyoming and Air Force followed with a punt and a fumble, respectively, Wyoming found itself on its own 11-yard line. Kody Sutton fumbled the ball on a strip by Brady Amack. Needing only 26 yards to score, Asher Clark picked up 21 of those on one play. Three plays later, Mike DeWitt found the end zone for a second time in the game.

Wyoming Vs. Air Force Halftime Score: Cowboys Lead, 12-7

The wind in Colorado Springs has stymied Saturday's game between the Air Force Falcons and the Wyoming Cowboys. At halftime, the Cowboys lead, 12-7.

After each team scored in the first quarter, the scoring died down until the waning second of the first quarter. The Cowboys used nearly 6:30 on the clock for their first score, a Brett Smith one-yard rush. The Falcons answered back with a Mike DeWitt rushing touchdown late in the first quarter.

Nether team has punted all that well, but the Cowboys took advantage of the Falcons' final one of the second quarter. David Baska made just a 12-yard punt, giving the Cowboys just 42 yards to score. Brett Smith found Chris McNeill for a 12-yard reception to start the drive and then finished with a six-yard pass to McNeill to go up, 12-7. Alvester Alexander failed on the two-point conversion.

The Falcons lost quarterback Tim Jefferson to an injury and Connor Dietz has been running the ship. He has attempted one pass, Air Force's only of the game, and saw it go incomplete.

Tim Jefferson Injury: Air Force QB Leaves Game With Injury

After playing such an instrumental role in the comeback victory over Army last week, Air Force quarterback Tim Jefferson has suffered a potential concussion early in the matchup with Wyoming. According to Frank Schwab of the Colorado Springs Gazette, it doesn't appear the medical staff is taking any chances with Jefferson:

@GazetteAirForce: It appears AFA has taken Jefferson's helmet. Don't wanna jump the gun but could be a concussion that has ended his day. Could be.

Jefferson has been solid for the Falcons throughout the season, throwing for 1,129 yards and 8 TD's in nine games. He was particularly impressive against Army last week, throwing for 122 yards and rushing for 66 yards. Jefferson has been replaced by senior QB Connor Dietz. Dietz has only attempted 10 passes this season in a backup role, but did shoe his ability to run the ball in a win over New Mexico earlier this season, as he ran for 87 yards and a TD.

Wyoming Vs. Air Force Update: Falcons Take 7-6 Lead At End Of 1st Quarter

The Air Force Falcons and the Wyoming Cowboys flipped their drives on the next series of possessions. After the Falcons failed to score on fourth down, the Cowboys took over on their one-yard line and advanced just eight yards. After a 34-yard punt by Wyoming, Air Force had the ball at Wyoming's 46-yard line and went on to score and take a 7-6 lead.

Connor Dietz came in for an injured Tim Jefferson by rushing for a 13-yard gain. The Falcons then ran six more rushing plays with Dietz, Mike DeWitt and Asher Clark carrying the rock. DeWitt found the end zone for a nine-yard touchdown run. Parker Herrington was, unlike Daniel Sullivan, able to convert on the extra point attempt.

The first quarter has ended and the Falcons enter the second quarter with a 7-6 lead.

Wyoming Vs. Air Force Update: Brett Smith Puts Cowboys On Board For 6-0 Lead

The Wyoming Cowboys opened the scoring against the Air Force Falcons with a touchdown on the first drive of the game. Nearly six and a half minutes were shed on the clock, but that's what the Cowboys want to do on Saturday. Quarterback Brett Smith went 5-of-6 for 47 yards on the drive while he, Kody Sutton and Alvester Alexander rushed eight times for 38 yards. Smith rushed into the end zone for a one-yard touchdown and the 6-0 lead. Daniel Sullivan was wide on the extra point attempt.

On the Falcons' first drive of the game, Tim Jefferson nearly ended it before it even began. He rushed for a four-yard gain before fumbling the ball. Asher Clark was in the right place and able to recover the ball and maintain Air Force's possession. Wes Cobb followed two plays later with a 44-yard run and then saw the Falcons get the ball to the one-yard line. However, after going for it on fourth down, Jefferson was unable to punch the ball in for a score, ending a streak of 25 consecutive scores while in the red zone.

Zach Payne Injury: Air Force DE Injures Knee In Practice, Likely Out For Remainder Of Season

Air Force Falcons defensive end Zach Payne is one tough dude. He played through a torn ACL against the Army Black Knights last week, but his day is over after a knee injury on Saturday. According to Frank Schwab of the Colorado Springs Gazette, Payne re-injured the knee he hurt back in September while going to practice on Saturday afternoon. This will likely end the senior's football career at the Academy.

While the Falcons are close to becoming bowl eligible (they need seven wins this year since only one of their two wins over an FCS team counts towards eligibility), this knee injury likely won't allow him to play in later December when the Falcons should be in a bowl game.

Payne was going to play through the rest of the season with the ACL injury before this current one occurred.

Wyoming Vs. Air Force: Game Time, TV Schedule, Spread And More

The Air Force Falcons are hosting the Wyoming Cowboys on Saturday as they hope to move to 6-4 on the year. A sixth win would make them bowl eligible this year, which would give Air Force a fifth consecutive bowl appearance. They beat Georgia Tech 14-7 in the Independence Bowl last year.

The Cowboys actually have a better record than the Falcons this year, but they haven't beaten Air Force in their most recent meetings and they've actually been outscored by their opponents this season. Air Force has beaten Wyoming in every year since 2005.

Game time, date: 12:00 p.m. MT, Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011

Location: Falcon Stadium, Colorado Springs, CO

TV channel: Mountain West Sports Network

Spread: Air Force is favored by 11 points.

Series history: Air Force leads the all-time series, 26-20-3.

Wyoming Vs. Air Force: Cowboys Ready For Falcons After Facing Earlier Option Attacks

During Dave Christensen's two-year tenure at the helm so far of the Wyoming Cowboys, the Air Force Falcons are 2-0 against them, but they have had a tough time securing both victories. In 2009, the Falcons won, 10-0, by scoring all those points in a span of nearly five minutes over the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth quarter. In 2010, the Falcons were down, 14-7, in the third quarter, but Nathan Walker tied things up in the fourth quarter and Tim Jefferson had the game-winning touchdown run with 3:41 left on the clock.

Both times the Cowboys spent some time during camp thinking about the Falcons defense. But in Year 3, as Eric Schmoldt reports, Christensen decided to not spend time in camp readying for the Falcons since the game came so late on the schedule:

"We haven't seen an option team like Air Force, but we've seen some option football throughout the year," he said. "This is probably the first time since we've been here, going up against Air Force, where we've actually seen a little bit of option football beforehand."

The Cowboys allow 30.3 points per game while the Falcons average 34 points this season. The Cowboys better spend extra time getting ready for the No. 4 rushing attack in the nation.
