College Football Rankings, Week 11: BlogPoll Mirrors The BCS

The latest installment of SB Nation's BlogPoll is out and the top 11 matchup exactly with the latest BCS standings, so it only took a few weeks for that to happen. The top four teams this week have games they should win and hold tight onto their spots for the following week.

TCU's route of Utah pushed the Utes down to the 14th spot, but Utah is still the most disagreed upon team from the voters. San Diego State is just on the outside looking in the polls, and unless they upset TCU this will be the closest they get to seeing the top 25. Finally, Air Force is getting some votes in the BlogPoll after they beat Army last Saturday.

College Football Rankings, Week 11: Oregon Ducks, Auburn Tigers Control Their Own Destiny For

It is now crunch time for the top four teams in the BCS standings as Oregon and Auburn control their own destiny to meet in Glendale, Arizona for the BCS title; then there is TCU and Boise State who are hoping for one of the top two to stumble to get a shot for the BCS title.

As it stands right now, Boise State is on the bubble of making a BCS game since there is no guarantee they will be selected as an at-large choice with teams like LSU, Ohio State, Iowa or Nebraska as possible alternatives.  The bowl game is all about ticket sales and how many fans a team can bring rather then on the field performance. However, Dr. Jerry Palm from CollegeBCS.com believes that there is a chance that Boise State can still pass TCU to earn the automatic bid from the non-automatic qualifying conferences. Until that happens, there is the real possibility that Boise State could fall all the way down to the Humanitarian Bowl or if things fall correctly broker a deal for a potential matchup in the Las Vegas Bowl against Utah. There is still a lot of college football left and as we have seen upsets can happen.

Now, onto some of the key matchups that can shake up the college football polls this week in regards to the BCS. Plus, since Air Force is getting seven points from the Harris Interactive poll which puts them at 40th in the country in that poll. So, the Falcons have a ways to go to get back into the standings.

Now onto the games that will have an effect on the BCS, as usual times are mountain time and rankings reflect their position in the BCS.

#4 Boise State Broncos at Idaho Vandals (Friday, 7 p.m. ESPN2, ESPN3D, ESPN3.com)

There is really no drama in this game, expect that if Boise State can cover the 33.5 point spread to impress the human voters with some style points in order to close the gap, or even pass TCU. With this being the only game on Boise must attempt to run up the score in most likely the last meeting against Idaho for the foreseeable future.

Georgia Bulldogs at #2 Auburn Tigers (1:30 p.m. CBS)

With all of the Cam Newton pay-for-play drama with the FBI now getting involved one has to ask the legitimate question: 'Will this effect Newton's play on the field.' It is one thing to dismantle Tennessee-Chattanooga, but to up against an improving Georgia Bulldog team is on a whole different level. Dawg Sports came up with a plan on how to Auburn or more specifically Cam Newton by wrapping up and pursuing the best angles. My slightly uniformed opinion is that Georgia should try to get the ball to star wide receiver A.J. Green as often as possible since the Auburn defense is not elite.

San Diego State Aztecs at #3 TCU Horned Frogs (2 p.m. Versus)

Prior to TCU dismantling Utah I thought San Diego State would have a shot to put up some points and yards in the passing game against TCU, but now that is to be determined. The Aztecs do have the most prolific passing offense in the Mountain West lead by experienced quarterback Ryan Lindley who has two of the leagues best receivers in DeMarco Sampson and Vincent Brown. Plus, San Diego State has the best freshman running back in the nation and is 10th in the nation in yards per game. Utah had a similar offense and the Horned Frogs tore them apart. TCU should roll in this game in part due to the Aztecs have struggled the past few weeks.

New Mexico Lobos at Air Force Falcons (4 p.m. The Mtn.)

Air Force is bowl eligible for the third straight year and are shown some respect for receiving votes in Harris poll despite being 6-4. Even though New Mexico just received their first win of the season, Air Force should be able to take care of business and run at will against New Mexico. Last week, the Lobos allowed Wyoming to rush for 392 yards and allowed three players to rush for over 100 yards. So, Air Force should be able to run the ball as they please all game and get a well deserved big win after facing a tough schedule for the past four weeks.

#23 South Carolina Gamecocks at #22 Florida Gators (5:15 p.m. ESPN, ESPN3.com)

This winner gets the right to most likely face Auburn in the SEC title game. Florida seems to have finally found their offense that mightily struggled the first half of the season. It seems that the answer was to not play just two quarterbacks, but to play three different signal callers. Those three are: John Brantley, Jordan Reed and Trey Burton. Brantley is the guy but he can not do it all by himself and Alligator Army sums up the situation quite nicely:

The idea that Brantley is the best option as quarterback probably does not sit well with some of you. After watching Jordan Reed throw a perfect ball to Stone Hands Thompson on Saturday, it is hard to accept Reed as a backup. In addition, Trey Burton can run the ball like Reed, but lacks the arm of both Brantley and Reed.

That may cause some issues with South Carolina's defensive plan against the Gators, but they do have an idea of what to watch for when Florida has the ball with the main item to keep an eye is Florida's pass offense against South Carolina's pass defense.

#1 Oregon Ducks at Cal Golden Bears (5:30 p.m. Versus)

Everyone knows that Oregon can do and that is score at will against any defense they have played, but the Ducks do have a concern by losing backup quarterback and holder, Nate Costa to another knee injury. If for some reason Darron Thomas were to go down then the Ducks would be in serious trouble and in the nature of the Duck offense these injuries have happened, just look back at when to 2007 when Dennis Dixon tore his ACL against Arizona when the Ducks were on their way to a possible BCS title and in 2008 when Boise State knocked out two quarterbacks. The next quarterback in line would be true freshman Bryan Bennett, so as long as Costa remains healthy the Ducks will roll Cal, but if any thing were to keep him out then this could be 2007 again for the Ducks.

Cal is a Jekyll and Hyde team as they are 4-0 at home and is 1-4 at home. There is a small amount of hope for Cal to be able to pull off this upset, just remember this team is coached by Jeff Tefford who is capable of losing to a team while being a massive favorite and has been able to pull the unthinkable upset. Looking purely at the numbers Cal is overmatched in this game, and it is not even close. Cal might be able to take advantage of Oregon's defense since they are very fast, so the Bears could try to use some counter plays or play action to counter act that Oregon speed, but in the end Oregon should blow past Cal.

These are the big games to keep an eye on as they have the potential to make a big impact in the BCS if any of the top four were to get beat this weekend.

College Football Rankings, Week 11: Mountain West Bowl Projections

With the college football season winding down, the bowl landscape is taking shape and with only a few weeks left in the season it is now time to start looking at where Air Force, and the rest of the Mountain West will go bowling.

First off, here the Mountain West has five bowl tie-ins which include the following in order of the selection process: Las Vegas Bowl, Poinsettia Bowl, Independence Bowl, Armed Forces Bowl and the New Mexico Bowl.

Right now the Mountain West has four teams who are bowl eligible: TCU, Utah, Air Force and San Diego State. BYU is 4-5 and has a chance to become if they win two of their last three games, which they should. The way TCU is playing they should be heading to a BCS bowl game thus leaving the Mountain West with one and possibly two open bowl slots if BYU does not get to six wins.

Now onto the projections:

Rose Bowl

TCU Horned Frogs  vs. Wisconsin Badgers

TCU ends up here due to them being the top non-AQ schools so they get a BCS bid, and because of the provision that has the Rose Bowl take a non-AQ school the first time when a Pac-10 or Big 10 champion is in the BCS title game.

Las Vegas Bowl

Utah Utes vs. Boise State Broncos

The Las Vegas Bowl is slotted to take the fifth Pac-10 team, but as of right now Oregon State is 4-4 with games against USC, Washington State, at Stanford and then hosting Oregon, so getting to six wins will be tough. The other candidate is Arizona State who is 4-5 with games left against Stanford, UCLA and at Arizona. They also seem unlikely to become bowl eligible. There is talk about Texas A&M, Texas Tech or Ohio going to this game, but Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson should do his best to lure Boise State to this game if they get left out of the BCS.

Poinsettia Bowl

San Diego State Aztecs vs. Navy Midshipmen

This is an easy move for the Poinsettia Bowl since they are based out of San Diego, and that the Aztecs are the home team and have not been to a bowl game since 1998. Plus, San Diego is a Navy town, so this bowl game should be a large crowd.

Independence Bowl

Air Force Falcons vs. Boston College Eagles

This is a new bowl for the Mountain West and the matchup is against the seventh ACC team. Boston College still needs to win two games to make a bowl appearance which they should. The three games left on the schedule are against at Virginia, Duke and at Syracuse. The other choice could be Georgia Tech which would make for a game that could see a combined 10 passes between Air Force and Georgia Tech.

New Mexico Bowl

BYU Cougars vs. Fresno State Bulldogs

The reason for the New Mexico Bowl taking BYU instead of having them going to the Armed Forces Bowl is because Army has a tie in with the Armed Forces Bowl and then since bowl games revolve around money and selling tickets the other choice will most likely be Southern Miss from C-USA since that league also has a tie-in to the Armed Forces Bowl. This game will be a precursor to the 2011 season since the two schools are playing against each other in the agreement that has BYU playing a WAC heavy schedule in their first two years of independence.

College Football Rankings, Week 11: TCU Remains At No. 3 In BCS Standings

The top four positions in the latest BCS standings remained the same, with Oregon, Auburn, TCU and Boise State winning this weekend. Oregon and Auburn control their destinies right now, but Auburn will need to win the SEC championship to get into the BCS Championship game. No. 3 TCU dominated the Utah Utes, 47-7, on Saturday and substantially increased their lead over the No. 4 Boise State Broncos.  TCU has a .926 BCS average to Boise State's .866 average.

Previously No. 5, Utah fell to No. 14 after losing to the TCU Horned Frogs, which might be surprising to many observers. The Utes were outclassed for the entire night and barely staved off a shutout. However, the Utes will have trouble playing in a bowl game on New Year's Day. The LSU Tigers, 8-1, took Utah's spot after defeating the Alabama Crimson Tide (who are the highest ranked two-loss team at No. 12).

Outside of LSU, the other big movers this week were the Stanford Cardinal (from No. 13 to No. 6) and the Oklahoma State Cowboys (from No. 17 to No. 10).

The top 10 BCS teams:

1. Oregon
2. Auburn
3. TCU
4. Boise State
5. LSU
6. Stanford
7. Wisconsin
8. Nebraska
9. Ohio State
10. Oklahoma State

College Football Rankings, Week 11: TCU, Air Force Move Up In Harris Interactive Poll

In this week’s Harris Interactive Poll, the TCU Horned Frogs and the Air Force Horned Frogs each moved up in the poll. The TCU Horned Frogs moved up one spot to No. 3 and received five first-place votes. Boise State fell to fourth, but did receive nine first-place votes. The Utah Utes fell to No. 15 in this poll as well.

In a recurring pattern, the San Diego State Aztecs had the second most points of all unranked teams with 64. The Air Force Falcons reemerged in the Harris Poll with seven votes.

Overall, there isn’t much to argue passionately over in any of the three rankings released today. Oregon and Auburn are clearly the top two teams in the nation, while TCU and Boise State continue to be BSC busters. One can quibble over how many first-place votes those teams should receive, but there’s no question they are still below the Ducks and the Tigers.

The latest BCS standings will be released later tonight.

The 7-2 San Diego State Aztecs also received the second most points among teams outside the top 25 with 44. College Football Rankings, Week 11: Projected BCS Standings

The 2010 college football season is starting to mirror the 2007 season when a two-loss LSU team made a giant gain after they won the SEC title to go to the BCS title game, which they won. Well LSU is back again in the discussion after their upset win over Alabama to put them back in the discussion for the BCS title. TCU boat-raced Utah, 47-7 to remove the Utes from consideration, Oklahoma lost to Texas A&M while Oregon and Boise State just keep winning.

Then throw in a handful of other upsets that occurred on Saturday and a total of nine ranked teams lost. So, the BCS standings will look much different then last week. The top four teams should be the same order as last week with it being Oregon, Auburn, TCU and Boise State.

SB Nation's BCS Evolution has his early top 15 BCS standings:

1. Oregon Ducks
2. Auburn Tigers
3. TCU Horned Frogs
4. Boise State Broncos
5. LSU Tigers
6. Nebraska Cornhuskers
7. Stanford Cardinal
8. Wisconsin Badgers
9. Ohio St. Buckeyes
10. Oklahoma St. Cowboys
11. Michigan St. Spartans
12. Alabama Crimson Tide
13. Iowa Hawkeyes
14. Arkansas Razorbacks
15. Utah Utes

The official BCS standings are released at 6:15 p.m. mountain time, and look for the AP and coaches polls to be released later today.

College Football Rankings, Week 11: TCU Defeats Utah; Air Force Gains Commander-In-Chief Trophy And Bowl Eligibility

There will be some movement in both the Top 25 polls and the BCS standings. The most notable changes will surround Utah and Alabama. The Utah Utes were manhandled by the BCS No. 3 TCU Horned Frogs, 47-7. Utah, BCS No. 5, failed to put points on the board until the fourth quarter, when Jordan Wynn and Matt Asiata hooked up for a 19-yard touchdown. BCS No. 6 Alabama lost to No. 10 LSU because the Tigers scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to overcome an 11-point deficit. Nebraska, BCS No. 7, defeated Iowa State in overtime by intercepting a fake pass on an extra point attempt. Oregon and Auburn, the top two teams, won their games against Washington and Chattanooga and should remain atop the standings.

The Air Force Falcons brought the Commander-In-Chief Trophy back to the Academy for the first time since 2002 with a 42-22 victory over the Army Black Knights. The Falcons are now 6-4 on the season. While that will not be enough to re-enter the Top 25 polls, the Falcons are now bowl eligible. The most likely destinations, the Denver Post reports, are either the Armed Forces Bowl or the Independence Bowl. In the Armed Forces Bowl, the Falcons would potentially face a Conference USA team, while an Atlantic Coast Conference team would likely be the opponent in the Independence Bowl.
