The Texas Longhorns (2-0) stampeded over the New Mexico Lobos (1-1) on Saturday night, picking up a 45-0 victory. Despite leading time of possession by nearly eight minutes, New Mexico just couldn't find a way to put the ball into the end zone.
Texas quarterback David Ash (16-of-22, 221 yards) started the scoring with a 49-yard touchdown run about midway through the first quarter. Ash later threw passes of 22 and 45 yards for touchdowns, Mike Davis and Daje Johnson catching them. The other three scores came on rushing touchdowns by Joe Bergeron and D.J. Monroe and a Case McCoy touchdown pass to M.J. McFarland.
New Mexico quarterback B.R. Holbrook took a nasty hit to the helmet in the second quarter and missed the remainder of the game. He was 5-of-8 for 32 yards. The ground game finished with 206 yards totaled by nine runners. Kasey Carrier's 51 yards led the squad while Cole Gautsche, the replacement quarterback, had 35 yards on 13 carries.
New Mexico will be on the road in Texas once again when they face the Texas Tech Red Raiders next week. Texas visits Ole Miss next weekend.
