The BYU Cougars (1-0) opened the season with a 30-6 victory over Mike Leach and the Washington St. Cougars and will now play the FCS Weber State Wildcats (0-1) on Saturday. Staying at home, the Cougars will likely improve to 2-0 barring a rather surprising upset by Weber State.
BYU quarterback Riley Nelson had a strong 2012 debut, completing 25 of 36 passes for 285 yards and two touchdown passes. Head coach Bronco Mendenhall is enamored with Nelson's leadership and believes he will be a special player. Tight end Kaneakua Friel caught 101 yards and two touchdown passes to help aid the offense.
Weber State went on the road to face the Fresno St. Bulldogs and lost, 37-10. This wasn't as much of a blowout as the final score indicates, as the Bulldogs had just a 24-10 lead entering the final quarter. Quarterback Mike Hoke threw for 202 yards and a touchdown against Fresno's defense, but the Bulldogs' Derek Carr finished with 298 passing yards and two touchdowns. Nelson could be a in for a solid day of production.
