The Utah State Aggies earned their first win over the Utah Utes in 12 tries 27-20 in overtime on Friday night. Utah State got off to a 13-0 first-half lead over their in-state rivals, but nearly let that lead slip away as the Utes scored 13 straight points to tie the game late in the third quarter.
In the first half, the Utah State defense was getting after the Utah offense and sacked Jordan Wynn multiple times. A hard hit eventually knocked Wynn out of the game by injuring his left shoulder. Utah State got back on the board in the fourth quarter to go up 20-13 on a quick three-play 66 yard drive when Chuckie Keeton connected with Kellen Bartlett on a 4-yard touchdown pass.
Utah responded with their own touchdown on a 5-play 67 yard touchdown when Kenneth Scott caught his second touchdown on the game. Utah had one last chance to win the game in regulation, but the 52-yard field goal attempt was missed.
Utah State could have had this game in regulation as they missed an extra point in the first quarter. Had they made that kick, they would have defeated Utah 21-20.
In overtime, Keeton was left all alone and was able to run for 20 yards to the the 1-yard line, and then Kerwynn Williams punched it in for Utah State.
Utah thought they had the game tied, but tight end Jake Murphy was called for pass interference, which is how he got wide open on the play. With Utah pushed back to their 20-yard line, they were unable to tie the game.
