London Olympics 2012: Janay DeLoach Wins Bronze Medal In Women's Long Jump

Colorado State alum Janay DeLoach won the bronze medal in the women's long jump at the London Olympics on Wednesday. She nabbed third place in the event by the slimmest of margins, jumping 6.89m to beat out Latvia's Ineta Radevica, who jumped 6.88m.

Fellow American Brittney Reese took the gold medal in the event with a distance of 7.12m, a figure that would've been by far the best mark in the semifinals, too. Russia's Elena Sokolova won the silver medal with a distance of 7.07m, but Team USA nabs two medals in the event.

In DeLoach's first attempt, she jumped 6.77 meters, which would hold as the fourth-highest score through the first four rounds of attempts. After faulting on her second attempt, she posted scores of 6.71m and 6.74m in her third and fourth attempts, respectively, failing to top her initial attempt. Finally, on her fifth attempt, she got onto the winner's podium.

DeLoach qualified for the final in impressive fashion, jumping 6.81m with the wind blowing against her to post the best score in her 16-athlete group. Only Great Britain's Shara Proctor posted a better score in the second group, jumping 6.83m with less resistance from the wind. Neither landed a medal, though, as Proctor finished 9th.
