BYU Vs. Washington State Final Score: Cougars Ruin Mike Leach's Return To Coaching, Win Big

The BYU Cougars defense were able to shut down Washington St. Cougars offense and ruin Mike Leach's return to coaching as they won 30-6. There was hype surrounding Washington State's offense, but they could get nothing done on Thursday night.

The BYU defense held them to negative five yards rushing, and as for the alleged Air-Raid attack that Leach would be bringing in from Pullman was non-existent Jeff Tuel completed 30-of-45 passes for 229 yards and threw two picks.

The game turned toward BYU in the second quarter where they outscored Washington State 17-6 and take a commanding 24-6 lead at the half. The two field goals by Washington State were aided by 38 penalty yards and then 42 yards of penalties on those two drives. If not for the penalties then it is possible that BYU could have had a shutout.

The BYU offense played well with starting quarterback Riley Nelson completed 25-of-36 passes for 285 yards with two touchdowns, and freshman quarterback Taysom Hill saw time and completed his first collegiate pass which was an 18-yard touchdown pass to tight end Kaneauka Friel.

Friel had a big game after star wide receiver Cody Hoffman left the game with a quad contusion by catching six passes for 101 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Washington State Vs. BYU Halftime Score: Riley Nelson, Taysom Hill Put Cougars Ahead Of Wazzu, 24-6

The BYU Cougars lead the Washington St. Cougars at halftime, 24-6. Quarterback Riley Nelson has already thrown for 178 yards and two touchdown passes. His second one was a risky throw, but Kaneakua Friel was able to get his hands on the ball, shed his tacklers and pick up a 25-yard touchdown reception. Nelson threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Skyler Ridley late in the first quarter.

BYU freshman quarterback Taysom Hill found Friel for an early second-quarter touchdown. Riley Stephenson put the remaining three points on the board with a 28-yard field goal.

Mike Leach's debut with Washington State has been lackluster in the first half. Jeff Tuel is just 14-of-24 for 108 yards and an interception. He nearly had a touchdown pass late in the first half, but a holding call brought the ball back. Kicker Andrew Furney wound up making his second field goal of the game. He has field goals of 47 and 41 yards.
