2012 USA Pro Challege Results: Christian Vande Velde Takes Second in Stage 2

Cyclist Christian Vande Velde (Garmin-Sharp) was beaten out over the final kilometer by Tejay van Garderen (BMC), finishing just behind him in the second stage of the USA Pro Challenge in Colorado. The 159.6 km., course rode from Montrose to Crested Butte.

Van Garderen took the overall lead in the victory, edging out Boulder-based Garmin-Sharp's Tyler Farrar, who finished 4:39 off the pace. Farrar had won the race's first stage, a 202-km ride from Durango to Telluride, Monday.

His teammate, Thomas Danielson, finished sixth, 12 seconds from the leader.

Alex Howes made an early run for Garmin-Sharp sprinting out early but running out of steam by the end. He ended up finishing 24th, 26 seconds off the lead.

Garmin-Sharp's Peter Stetina finished 14th, 12 seconds from van Garderen.

Stage 3 is set for Wednesday, a 210 km ride from Gunnison to Aspen, the longest stage of the course. Stage 7 is set for Aug. 26 in Denver.
