The U.S. Amateur Championship at Cherry Hills Village saw an underdog story triumph as Steve Fox, a 21-year old from Hendersonville, Tennessee won the event with a birdie putt on the 37th hole. Michael Weaver of Fresno, California, was leading by two holes with two to play but consecutive birdies by Fox forced an extra hole, where a third straight birdie led to his triumph:
Fox, a senior at Tennessee-Chattanooga, made an 11-foot putt to win the 35th hole.
Still with a 1-up advantage, Weaver, a 21-year-old redshirt junior at the University of California, needed to make a 5-foot putt on the 36th hole at the 18th green to secure the win, but it lipped out, extending the championship round to a 37th hole.
The winner and runner-up of the U.S. Amateur title gets an automatic invite to next year's U.S. Open held at Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania, so both Fox and Weaver will make the trip. Fox gets an invite to all the majors except for the PGA Championship while the runner-up gets Masters and U.S. Open invites.
