The first round of the U.S. Golf Amateur Championship came to a close on Wednesday, and the day's action in Cherry Hills was headlined by an upset of the 3rd-ranked amateur player Jordan Spieth. Thomas Pieters, the reigning NCAA individual champion from Illinois, eliminated Speith 1-up.
The world's number-one amateur, Chris Williams of Idaho, dispatched Peter Williams of New Hampshire 3-up.
Earlier in the day, Denver's Michael Schoolcraft was eliminated by Zack Munroe of North Carolina on a sudden-death hole. Schoolcraft surrendered a two-up lead after 13 holes before being forced into the playoff.
As for other players from around the region, 19-year old Devon Purser of Clearfield, Utah upset Mexico's Sebastian Vazquez, 4 & 3, to advance to the round of 32. Zac Blair out of Ogden, Utah, was defeated by Fresno's Michael Weaver, 2 & 1.
Many are also watching Doug Hanzel from Savannah, Georgia. The 55-year old advanced to the round of 32 by taking down Andrew Biggadike, 3 & 2.
