2012 London Olympics: Missy Franklin Takes 2nd In 100m Backstroke Prelims

On Saturday, Colorado swimmer Missy Franklin, 17, won her first Olympic medal with a bronze in the 4x100m freestyle relay. On Sunday, Franklin began her quest for individual medals with the preliminaries of the 100 meter backstroke. Franklin won her heat and had the second-best time at 59.37.

Emily Seebohm of Australia set an Olympic record with her winning time of 58.23. Seebohm blew away the competition as a result, but it was Franklin's heat that contained the most sub-1-minute finishers with five. Belinda Hocking of Australia finished second behind Franklin at 59.61.

The semifinals for this event take place at 1:49 p.m. MT on Sunday. The finals will take place on Monday night. Can Franklin win her second medal and first individual one? Stay tuned.
