Missy Franklin moved one step closer to competing in a third event at the 2012 London Olympics, but she still has two more rounds to go. On Friday, Franklin finished seventh in the 100 meter freestyle preliminaries to advance to the night's semifinals. She completed the competition in 54.78, 0.43 seconds behind Dana Vollmer's winning time of 54.35.

Allison Schmitt came in second place with a final time of 54.49. Jessica Hardy, Margo Geer, Amanda Weir and Lia Neal took third through sixth place. Schmitt and Geer were the top two finishers ahead of Franklin in their respective Heat 14.

Franklin's best time in this event is 53.63. She will look to qualify for Saturday's 100 meter free finals with the semis on Thursday night. She will also take part in the 200 meter backstroke on Saturday and the 50 meter freestyle on Sunday, both preliminaries.
