Fort Collins native Marco Gonzales struck out eight hitters as part of a five-inning effort in his latest start for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod League. The 20-year-old has thrived on the mound in the summer league, although his performance as a hitter hasn't been quite as impressive.
On Friday, Gonzalez allowed two runs on five hits over five innings in a 12-10 loss to Wareham, putting up the eight strikeouts without walking a single hitter. The pitcher, who attends Gonzaga University, has a 2.70 ERA with 13 strikeouts and zero walks over his first two starts this summer.
He hasn't fared quite as well at the plate, going 2-for-11 with two walks over three games playing first base. On Tuesday, he went 1-for-4 with a double, a walk, two RBI and two strikeouts.
