The first mountain test of the 2012 Giro d'Italia has crowned a new maglia rosa-wearer. Garmin-Barracuda's Ramunas Navardauskas has given the jersey to Adriano Malori following the Urbino-Porto Sant'Elpidio ride through the Apennines. Malori finished second on Stage 6 after coming in a full 1:10 behind stage-winner Miguel Rubiano.
As Podium Cafe points out, the race had a bit of drama with Navardauskas failing (he was nearly 16 minutes behind Rubiano) and several other riders involved in a crash:
Sprinters Tyler Farrar (Garmin), Thor Hushovd (BMC) and Romain Feillu (Vacansoleil) all left the Giro following a crash earlier in the day. Overall leader Ramunas Navardauskas suffered on the climbs and saw his race lead go up the road.
While Garmin has lost the general classification lead, Ryder Hesjedal remains in third-place overall, behind by 17 seconds, with Christian Vande Velde in fifth and Peter Stetina in seventh. They will tackle the mountains on Saturday.
