A very late goal from Colorado Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson gave the Avs a 1-0 lead over the Edmonton Oilers on Friday night. Johnson put one past Oilers goalie Devan Dubnyk with just 47 seconds to go in the period; it was Johnson's fourth goal of the season, and it came on assists from Mark Oliver and Ryan O'Reilly.
The goal capped what was an evenly played period between the two teams, with the Oilers notching two more shots than the Avs but also two more penalty minutes. Colorado was unable to cash in on either power play, though Johnson's goal redeemed what might have been looked back on as a wasted period.
It was also a strong first period for Avs goalie Semyon Varlamov, who turned away every Edmonton shot as Jean-Sebastien Giguere's replacement.
