Rockies targeting Jason Giambi as hitting coach

Jamie Sabau

Giambi lost out on becoming the manager, but the Rockies still want the veteran first baseman on their coaching staff.

Just one day after hiring Walt Weiss to be their new manager, the Rockies are looking to Jason Giambi to be their hitting coach. Giambi interviewed to be the manager, but the Rockies went with Weiss because they felt Giambi was too close to a number of players on the roster after spending the last three seasons with Colorado. General Manager Dan O'Dowd says he considers Giambi a Rockie and hopes he'll stay on with the club as the hitting coach.

Giambi has said he'd only retire for a managerial job. His future with Rockies as a player is bleak so Giambi could wade into free agency waters and see who bites, but he at least seems willing to listen to the Rockies' offer. In his three full seasons with Colorado, Giambi hit .245/.370/.444 with 20 home runs and 75 RBI while playing in 211 games. His numbers took a bit of a tumble this year, ending the 2012 season with a .225 batting average and just one home run and eight runs batted in.
