Deonte Williams, the Cal Poly running back, has been added to the 2012 Walter Payton Watch List, according to The Sports Network. The Payton Award is the award given to the most outstanding player in all of the Football Championship Subdivision.
Northern Colorado knows first-hand how capable Williams is, as his performance against the Bears was one of the most fresh games on the Walter Payton Watch List's mind when he was added Tuesday. He torched the Bears for 22 carries, 117 yards and three touchdowns on Oct. 13 as the Mustangs doubled up Northern Colorado 56-28.
Williams is a 5'10, 200-pound back who has benefited from playing in Cal Poly's triple option offense. Through seven games, Williams has 134 carries for 926 yards—an average of 19.1 carries and 132.3 yards per game—and nine touchdowns.
Two other players joined the Walter Payton Watch List on Tuesday: Eastern Illinois wide receiver Erik Lora and Stephen F. Austin wide receiver Cordell Roberson. The award will be presented Dec. 17.
