2012 Rose Bowl: Russell Wilson Falters, Waits For NFL Draft

The 2012 Rose Bowl saw the Wisconsin Badgers fall to the Oregon Ducks, 45-38, and for Russell Wilson this means the end of his college career. While a loss is one thing, the way in which Wilson didn't even get one last play must surely be a burning memory for him. He attempted to spike the ball with just a couple of ticks left on the clock, but upon a decent length of review, it was confirmed that there was no time left on the clock once the ball hit the ground. The Ducks won the Rose Bowl.

Wilson now faces his second draft in three years. He was a fourth-round draft pick by the Colorado Rockies in the 2010 MLB Draft, but no one is quite sure what future Wilson has in the NFL. He has been knocked for his height since he comes in just below six feet tall, but he had strong season for the Badgers. He threw for over 3,000 yards and had 33 touchdown passes.

According to NFLDraftScout.com, Wilson projects as a Round 4 or 5 selection. Obviously that is not as good as being a fourth-round pick in the MLB Draft, but he would definitely be considered a quarterback to watch in camp for whichever team drafts him.

Rose Bowl 2012 Score: Oregon Ducks Defeat Wisconsin Badgers In A Thriller, 45-38

Wisconsin and Oregon couldn't quite maintain the scoring pace they'd established in the first half, but the final two quarters still saw plenty of scoring. Oregon's defense did a better job against Wisconsin's power rushing game after the break and picked up a decisive fumble recovery late in the fourth quarter that helped propel the team to a 45-38 win over Wisconsin.

The Badgers appeared to be on their way to a game-tying touchdown when Russell Wilson hit Jared Abbrederis for a 29-yard completion that moved the ball to the Oregon 30 with about four minutes to go, but Abbrederis was stripped at the sideline and the ball improbably settled right at the boundary, where an opportunistic Ducks defender hopped on it.

Oregon picked up a first down on its ensuing possession, and with only one timeout, there wasn't much Wisconsin could do to save time. By the time the Badgers got the ball back, there were less than 30 seconds left, and while Russell Wilson was able to move the football, he ultimately ran out of time.

Wilson finished 19-26 for 296 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also ran one in for a score.

Rose Bowl 2012 Score: Wisconsin And Oregon Tied At 28 At The Half

Oregon and Wisconsin continued to pile up yardage and points in the second quarter, as the two teams continue to trade blows. Neither the Ducks nor the Badgers have led by more than a touchdown in this game.

Wisconsin RB Montee Ball kicked of the second quarter scoring with a three-yard run. Oregon answered on its ensuing drive with a 54-yard touchdown pass from Darron Thomas to Kenjon Barner. Wisconsin re-claimed the lead with a 33-yard fumble return for a score, and Oregon's offense pulled the team even once again with a three-yard pass in the final minute.

Russell Wilson is getting plenty of support from the ground game, as is usually the case, and he's hit 10 of 13 pass attempts for 157 yards. Montee Ball is well over 100 yards rushing, and the two teams have combined for well over 600 yards of offense so far.

Rose Bowl 2012 Score: Wisconsin And Oregon Tied At 14 After 1st Quarter

A game featuring two of the nation's best offenses has lived up to the billing thus far, as neither the Wisconsin Badgers nor the Oregon Ducks have had trouble making big plays or putting up points.

Wisconsin got the scoring started with a 38-yard play-action pass from Russell Wilson to Jared Abbrederis, and it took less than two-and-a-half minutes for the Ducks to drive down the field and answer with a short touchdown run by LaMichael James.

Wilson gave the Badgers a 14-7 lead with this run:

Wilson, the former Rockies prospect, finished the quarter 4-6 for 80 yards and a score through the air.

Oregon tied the score on a Rose Bowl-record 91 yard touchdown run by De'Anthony Thomas late in the quarter. The two teams already have combined for over 350 yards.

2012 Rose Bowl: Russell Wilson, Former Colorado Rockies Prospect, Leads Wisconsin Against Oregon

Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Russell Wilson has had quite the year, which ends on Monday with the 2012 Rose Bowl. He finished up a football career at North Carolina State and then elected to pursue baseball full time with the Colorado Rockies. However, that didn't turn out quite as he expected, struggling through three months of baseball with the Low-A Asheville Tourists. During his second month in the minors, rumors of a possible return to college swarmed and by the end of June resulted in Wilson transferring to Wisconsin.

Wilson went on to lead the Badgers to an 11-2 record, a Big Ten championship and a spot in the 2012 Rose Bowl. Wilson threw for nearly 2,900 yards and had 31 touchdown passes. He will face the No. 5 Oregon Ducks on Monday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. MT on ESPN.

But once the Rose Bowl ends, Wilson will need to see what his future holds. He will most certainly see what the NFL thinks of him, but the CFL had been discussed as a possibility during the summer. As well, the Colorado Rockies still hold Wilson's rights and have said they would welcome him back if he wanted to. Twenty twelve could be another exciting year for Wilson.

2012 Rose Bowl: Russell Wilson Leads Wisconsin Against Oregon After Leaving Colorado Rockies

Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Russell Wilson has had quite a year. After winning the Champ Sports Bowl against the West Virginia Mountaineers, 23-7, on Dec. 28, 2010, Wilson appeared ready to give up the gridiron with the N.C. State Wolfpack for the baseball diamond. A few weeks later he committed to the Colorado Rockies, who drafted him in Round 4 of the 2010 MLB Draft. He played a bit that summer before returning to the Wolfpack.

Wilson started the 2011 season with the Low-A Asheville Tourists. He struggled mightily and by May rumors of his returning to football began. At the end of June, Wilson had settled on Wisconsin. He finished his baseball season hitting .228/.366/.342 in 61 games. Wilson was a raw baseball player who was adjusting to being an everyday player and using a wood bat. He had to return a large portion of his signing bonus and was placed on the restricted list.

Wilson went on to an 11-2 record, a Big Ten Championship and the Rose Bowl -- all in his only season in Madison, WI. He completed 206-of-284 passes for 2,879 yards with 31 touchdowns and three touchdowns. He could certainly be one of the lesser candidates for the 2011 Heisman Trophy.

Wilson will attempt to make it in the NFL, but the CFL has also been talked about during the summer. The Rockies would certainly welcome him back into the organization if he wanted to pursue baseball again.
