Rockies Lose, 6-5, After Failed Comeback In 9th Inning

It wasn't quite as impressive as his last start against the Colorado Rockies, but Anibal Sanchez tamed the Rockies for another game, defeating the Rockies, 6-5, on Tuesday night. But Leo Nunez almost blew the game again the bottom of the ninth inning. Todd Helton led off the inning with a single and was left there after Seth Smith and Eliezer Alfonso both flied out to the outfield. Jason Giambi entered as a pinch-hitter for Chris Iannetta and unloaded a home run to right field for the second night in a row.

Ty Wigginton stepped to the plate and added a single to keep the game alive. Eric Young Jr. replaced Wigginton at first base to put speed on the base paths. However, Dexter Fowler popped out to the shortstop to end the game.

Sanchez (7-6, 3.97 ERA) had allowed three runs in eight innings, all the runs coming on solo home runs. Troy Tulowitzki (25) hit one in the second inning and then saw Seth Smith (13) hit one two at-bats later. Carlos Gonzalez added his 19th homer of the season in the fourth inning.

Jhoulys Chacin (9-10, 3.59 ERA) didn't have it at the start of the game. After a ground out by Emilio Bonifacio to start the game, Bryan Petersen tripled to deep left field. Mike Stanton worked a walk off of Chacin to put to men on base. Greg Dobs followed with an RBI single to center field. Stanton moved to third and Dobbs wound up on second following a bobble by Fowler on the play. Mike Cameron's single drove in Stanton and Dobbs for the early 3-0 lead.

Chacin left after the fourth inning, which saw him give up two more runs. One of the runs scored on Petersen's second triple of the night. Edgmer Escalona came in for the next three innings and allowed a solo homer to Mike Stanton (28) in the seventh inning.

The Rockies were hurt at the top of the order, as Dexter Fowler and Mark Ellis combined for an 0-for-9, six-strikeout performance.
