2012 NFL Draft: Andrew Luck Looks To Follow In John Elway, Jim Plunkett's Steps As No. 1 Overall Pick From Stanford
Stanford Cardinal quarterback Andrew Luck is the odds-on favorite to be the No. 1 overall pick in April's 2012 NFL Draft. Should that happen, Luck will be the fourth Cardinal to be selected with the No. 1 overall pick. All three have been quarterbacks: Bobby Garrett in 1954, Jim Plunkett in 1971 and John Elway in 1983.
Elway, as we all know, demanded a trade from the Baltimore Colts and wound up becoming a legend for the Denver Broncos. Luck has already broken several of Elway's record at Stanford and has been hailed as the next John Elway. In his ESPN Insider mock draft, Todd McShay calls Luck a "once-in-a-generation quarterback prospect."
The pressure on Luck to live up to labels like that is going to be immense. And if the Indianapolis Colts decide to select Luck and move Peyton Manning, Luck will need to convert an entire franchise to support him almost immediately.
