On the ensuing kickoff, Brandon Closner returned the ball for an 82-yard touchdown and the 28-13 lead. On Montana State's next drive, McGhee threw an easy interception for Sam Houston State to pick off the ball at the 50-yard line. It was returned to the 35-yard line. A personal foul on Montana State put the ball at the seven-yard line. Two plays later, Ryan Wilson ran the ball in for a touchdown and the 35-13 lead.
