Rockies Earn Much Needed 9-6 Win Over San Diego

With an exhausted bullpen and inconsistent starting pitching, the Rockies needed a big start from Jorge De La Rosa.

He provided one of his best games of the season, shutting down the Padres for over 7 innings.

Troy Tulowitzki continued his torrid September, hitting two 3-run homeruns and driving in a career best seven runs. He has now hit 11 homeruns in the past 13 games. Jay Payton went 3 for 4 in his first start since September 2008. Jonathan Herrera also contributed a 3 for 4 day, scoring two runs.

San Diego Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez did his best to keep his team in the game, matching Tulowitzki by hitting two homeruns himself, but it was not enough.

Huston Street pitched a flawless ninth inning for the save.

With the Atlanta loss, Colorado now trails both the Wild Card and NL West by 2 1/2 games. They have an off day tomorrow before heading to Los Angeles for a three game series.

De La Rosa PItches Into The 8th Inning, Padres Inch Closer On HR

Jorge De La Rosa pitched a solid 7 1/3 innings and was relieved by Joe Beimel after allowing back to back hits.

De La Rosa’s final line: 7.1 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 7 K

Beimel faced Adrian Gonzalez and promptly gave up a three run blast, Gonzalez’s second homerun of the game. He was replaced by Rafael Betancourt, who struck out the two batters he faced.

Even though the blowout is gone, the Rockies still lead 9-6 and are looking for three more outs to secure the victory.

Clayton Richard Pulled In 4th Inning, Rockies Lead 9-2

Padres starter Clayton Richard has been pulled in the 4th inning after allowing three straight hits to begin the inning. Eric Young Jr., Jonathan Herrera, and Carlos Gonzalez have all singled in the inning, with Young scoring.

Richard’s final line: 3.0 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 3 K on 80 pitches.

Edward Mujica came into the game with runners on first and third and promptly allows the second 3-run homerun of the game to Troy Tulowitzki.

Tulowitzki has 7 RBI in the game, and now has hit 11 homeruns in the past 13 games.

Rockies Lead Padres 5-1 After Three Innings

Jorge De La Rosa has thrown 3 spectacular innings, his only blemish a solo homerun to former Rockie catcher Yorvit Torrealba in the top of the 3rd inning.

In the 1st inning, the Rockies scored on an RBI single from Troy Tulowitzki, scoring Eric Young Jr. after he bunted his way onto the basepaths to start the game. San Diego stud left hander Clayton Richard appeared to be cruising, but ran into serious trouble in the 3rd.

De La Rosa helped his own cause by leading off the inning with a single and scored on a Gonzalez single for a 2-1 lead. But the Rockies weren’t quite done.

Tulowitzki came to the plate with runners on first and third, and he cracked his 21st homerun of the season into center field to give the Rockies a commanding 5-1 lead. It is the 10th homerun in the past 13 games for the reigning NL Player of the Week.
