Rockies Catcher Conundrum: A Bad Choice Either Way?

Immediately after last night's Rockies loss, Keith Law tweeted:

As much as I'd like to bust out the #poseyed tag again, I think tonight the Rockies got #olivoed ... or just #jimtracyed

The Rockies did get olivoed as he essentially cost the Rockies the game with his poor throw to third base that wound up in the outfield and scored the winning run. No one should blame Jim Tracy for this one, though.

And right after that another one from Keith:

BTW, Olivo, since August 1st: .133/.148/.150.

But let's look at the alternative to having Olivo play: .163/.288/.186. Those are Chris Iannetta's numbers for August. And for the season Iannetta is hovering around the Mendoza line with a .203 batting average.

Neither catcher is playing well right now, but Olivo has really taken a dive since the start of the second half of the season. He's hitting .160/.192/.150 post-All-Star Break after hitting .325/.377/.548 before the All-Star Game. Their road numbers are just as horrible, but as we know the Rockies fail to hit on the road.

It's really a no-win situation for Jim Tracy when starting a catcher. Well, at least until a third catcher spends time with the team this month.

Altitude To Broadcast 75 Nuggets Games During 2010-11

If you can't get to the Pepsi Center this season, Altitude has you covered. The network will air 75 Nuggets games this upcoming season on its standard channel as well as several on ALT2. All games will be broadcast in high-definition.

Look for me at Madison Square Garden when the Nuggets take the court against the Knicks on December 12. Oh, who am I kidding? No one will be able to see me from where I'll be sitting.

Peaks & Valleys - September 1 - Rockies Start September With High Hopes

The Rockies failed to close out September with a victory, but it wasn't for lack of trying. As Bryan Kilpatrick notes in his recap of the game at Purple Row:

The Rox squared up quite a few balls over the course of the evening, and all things considered, played well enough to win. Sometimes - as the Giants can certainly attest - it's just not your night.

September will need to be the Rockies' month if they want to rock October for the third time in four seasons.

Team-specific blog highlights after the jump.

Troy Renck Makes The Rockies Roster For A Night

Even before baseball rosters expand today, the Rockies made one addition to the roster last night. The Denver Post's Rockies beat writer Troy Renck was listed on the lineup card. Check out out here. With rosters expanding today, the Rockies are expected to add at least another catcher and an outfielder. Renck's time on the roster will be short.

I wonder who thought up that idea.
